Starting and running a successful company involves navigating a sea of advice, often found in numerous books aimed at those with varying levels of financial support. Entrepreneurship offers the chance to leave a lasting impact and attain economic mobility typically limited to the privileged few. However, accessing support and expertise can be challenging, especially for startups outside major cities lacking diverse talent pools. Securing a mentor in finance, technology, or leadership can make or break a company's success.

Level the Playing Field for Small Businesses

Data substantiates the need for The AFE Society. According to a report from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Minority Business Development Agency, minority businesses are three times more likely to be denied loans than non-minority businesses. Moreover, a 2018 study conducted by SCORE highlighted that women entrepreneurs, for example, face significant obstacles in access to mentors and networks. Furthermore, the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation reported that businesses led by people of color were significantly less likely to receive venture capital funding.

A New Approach

We believe a significant federal investment in technical, financial, and leadership coaching for underrepresented business owners and founders will help address these needs. By doing so, we not only affirm our commitment to a fair and equitable society but also leverage the untapped potential in these communities to stimulate innovation and economic growth. The proposed intervention will require a multidimensional approach, bringing together federal agencies, local governments
Economic Growth: The success of underrepresented entrepreneurs translates into job creation, improved regional economies, and overall economic growth.
Diversity in Innovation: By providing resources to diverse entrepreneurs, we enhance the innovative capacity of the American business landscape, which can yield solutions to a wide array of challenges.
Societal Cohesion: Empowering underrepresented entrepreneurs helps foster an inclusive society where every individual has an equitable opportunity to succeed.
